Southern Preparatory Academy is a private military school in Camp Hill, Alabama for boys in grades 6-12. The academy emphasizes academic achievement, leadership and character development. It was formerly known as Lyman Ward Military Academy.

Dr. Lyman Ward founded the Academy in 1898 as a non-profit, non-dominant, all-male institution for rural youth in Alabama. The school is about 20 miles from Auburn. The original goal was to provide secondary education to people with the ability to learn, work readiness and, in turn, self-improvement. In 1901, the state of Alabama granted Ward a charter incorporating the school as the Southern Industrial Institute, Inc.
In 1948, Ward's death led to the creation of the War Department. In honor of its founder, the school changed its name to Lyman Ward Military Academy. During this time, the school also completed its core and co-ed programs.
In 1966, the school became a member of the JROTC program and is currently assigned a retired officer and noncommissioned officer from the Department of the Army.
In 1972, the school received its first accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, which it maintains to this day.

In 2019, Lyman Ward Military Academy changed its name to Southern Preparatory Academy and remains a premier JROTC. Focusing on college preparation, the Academy has added new programs, including drone certification and private pilot training and a flight, diving and handling simulator.

In March 2005, Lyman Ward Military Academy was indicted for alleged abuse. There were eight lawsuits alleging brutal mistreatment and abuse by senior cadets and school officials.
In August 2006, lightning struck and destroyed Dixon All Faiths Chapel. The chapel was rebuilt in 2014.
Alabama Teens Invited To Learn More About Military Academy Opportunities
In October 2007, Tallapoosa Hall was added to the Alabama Register of Historic Landmarks by the Alabama Historical Commission. The AHC certificate is currently on display in the reception area of Tallapoosa Hall.
The academy accepts middle and high school students preparing for college and other career fields, including trade school and the military. Many of these candidates are trying to improve their academic status and study habits. Applications for admission are accepted throughout the year. New cadets are admitted in August and January each year, starting each academic semester. Temporary withdrawals are considered and often accepted. All applicants are reviewed by the Office of Admissions and approved by the Admissions Committee, composed of academic and military department representatives.
The price for the year on the tires is $24,645. This includes room, board, tuition, lab fees, haircuts, laundry, dry cleaning, and library fees. It does not cover the cost of uniforms or personal money. The uniform fee for freshman cadets is $2,500.00, including sales tax. For returning stubs who have their own uniform, the uniform fee is $500. Advance and recurring student discounts are deducted from room, board and tuition fees. And Alabama stallions are eligible for a discount. The Academy accepts students throughout the year; however, an important deadline occurs in January. Fees for late rolling nuts are prorated based on rolling date.
Many courses are not covered by tuition, such as the flight program, diving program, drone program, handling program, beta club field trips, and Cante.

Southern Prep is on the semester system (block schedule) with a studt load for grades 9-12 consisting of eight courses per year. Classes are 90 minutes long, allowing for more discussion, assessment and class work. This also allows the teacher to work with each student individually as needed. Students take final exams for their first four classes of the year before winter break and begin the next four classes in the second semester.
In accordance with Alabama state requirements, studs must have four years of English, math, history and science. Other subjects are offered as electives. Qualified sophomores, juniors, and sophomores are eligible to take Advanced Placement and dual rollmt classes. A student can earn 6 to 8 credits per year. A student must have 24 credits to graduate.
Junior high school (grades 6-8) is also in the semester system. The courses take place throughout the school year and are divided into 45-minute lessons. A typical class load is seven classes.
The Southern Prep Band program typically allows studs to take band lessons designed to improve their individual and similar performance skills. However, as of 2021, the Band program has been discontinued until further notice. Band members performed annually for competitions, festivities and civic events. Past performances of the Lyman Ward Band include participation in the Talladega 500 (1980-1990), Mardis Gras (1980-1986), the National Veterans Day Parade in Birmingham, Alabama (1980-2012), the Peanut Festival in Dothan, Alabama (1980 –1990), as well as several Alabama Governor's Commando appearances, including the inaugural parade in 2006. The band also frequently performed in the Opelika and Alexander City Christmas parades.

The Southern Preparatory Drum Corps consists of 3-10 cadets led by the Drum Major, who was normally the longest serving member of the Drum Corps. The three types of drums played by the Drum Corps are snare, bass drum and quads. The Drum Corps performs with the Color Guard, the Drill Team, and sometimes the Drum Corps performs with the Sword Drill Team. Drum Corps members are awarded a Drum Corps chord, bow and ribbon after their first performance.
Each year, homecoming activities are held during a designated week. Special activities include a Homecoming Court crowning Quetta Homecoming during the Friday Night Football game.
The drill team is open to all cadets in grades 9-12 and competes in various state and national competitions throughout the school year. The drill team consists of 16 cadets and is led by two cadets, designated as the drill team commander and deputy drill commander. The exercise team is instructed and supervised by the commanding officer. Drill team members will receive a Cable, Ribbon and Bow after the first performance.
The Rifle Team is for all cadets in grades 9-12 who have a strong desire to compete in high school air rifles. Currently, the Rifle Team shoots in the sportier division and competes with Daisy 853 air rifles. The Rifle Team participates in the Northeast Alabama Area JROTC Rifle League. The league is recognized and uses the rules of the National Air Rifle Association. Teams compete in a 3-position competition consisting of prone, kneeling and standing positions of 33 feet (10 m). The team participates in the Auburn University War Eagle Invitational each year, where schools from Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida compete in air rifle competition over two days. In 2006, the team placed third at the War Eagle Invitational. Rifle Team members will receive a lanyard, ribbon and bow after their first match. They can also earn Sniper, Marksman and Expert badges.

Currently, one rifle team, Team A, consists of five shooters. The team practices after school on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Color Guard is intended for all 9th through 12th grade cadets who are within the appropriate height range. Currently, the Color Guard competes in the Armed Color Guard category and participates in several JROTC competitions across the state each year. The Color Guard conducts various activities on campus, including posting the colors at all home sporting events, all promotion ceremonies, and graduation cleanups. The color guard is known in the community for placing the colors at Pearson Elementary School in Alexander City for Veterans Day and at the Dayville Elementary School Veterans Day program. Color Guard members receive the Color Guard Cord, ACU Casket, Ribbon and Bow.
The sword drill team consists of 16 cadets, a deputy commander and a commanding officer. Sword practice is available to all cadets in grades 9-11. Sword Drill members sacrifice their free time at night for several months to learn the performance of a sword drill, which is passed down from year to year by the cadets, without the involvement of staff or teachers. The sword drill team usually performs only once, on Army Day of the year. The exception to this was the 2021 Sword Drill Team who performed at a banquet hosted by the Auburn Marriott Resort and Spa at the Grand National, although this has not been done since.
